01- How would you describe yourself?
To be honest, this is the question I was most afraid of. I have big problems with describing myself, but I will try my best for you.
My name is Marta and I’m living in Poland. Recently I moved to Wrocław – the hottest city in the whole country. Sometimes I regret it, cause I’m wearing black all the time.
I think of myself as a normal girl, maybe with a “little” darker twist on the outside. I consider myself as a perfectionist. I’m also very stubborn and I always try to reach my goals. Friends describe me as a quiet, kind and peaceful person, which I totally agree with, because I don’t need attention. I’m more of an observer type.
I think the worst side of my personality is that I’m very impatient, but I’m still working on it.
02- How and when did you start modeling?
It was over 4 years ago. My modeling career, if I can call it that in the very beginning, started when different photographers approached me asking for photos and telling that I look very interesting with my own style.
03- Why alternative modeling, do you feel related to alternative lifestyle if so how is it like in your country?
I never really wanted to be a model, but the alternative lead me to modeling. I’ve always been more alternative than a model. I loved black clothes and gothic style, but awareness of becoming a part of the alternative culture came when I was 11 years old. I was raised listening to metal in my family home.
A few things have changed since our last conversation. Then the Polish alternative was in the top form. I’m rather an individualist and some time ago I’ve cut myself off from alternative community in my country. I remained in my trusted circle.
Alternative people are more and more accepted in my country, ’cause people do understand that it’s just another level of sensitivity and creativity. Of course there are opponents, which are often the loudest, but it’s generally getting better.
04- If you had to chose one type of goth to define you which one would it be and why?
I don’t like to categorize myself. It depends on the day, weather, season and mostly my mood. But a quick look to my wardrobe allowed me to decide, that I’m closest to nu goth. Nu gothic clothing is the most practical, comfortable and universal of all the gothic styles. It connects classic goth aesthetics with casual versatility. I can wear it to job, concerts, shopping etc.
05- Can you tell us a bit of the story behind the modeling name “Blue Astrid”?
Blue – as you can probably guess – is for my love of this colour, as you can see by my hair.
Astrid came from my fascination with Norse mythology. It’s an old Norwegian name, from words “áss”- god and “fríðr” – beautiful.
06- You are a Tattoo artist and a very good one by the way, do you feel that your job helps you on your modeling work?
Thank you so much! I think the opposite – modeling helps me in the work of a tattoo artist. Thanks to photography and modeling I can better understand perspective and composition. I am often inspired by places and stylizations from photo sessions.
07- You did so many shoots and you pull out so many amazing looks, I have to ask do you have a favorite shoot, one that left you with good memories?
I have few favorite shoots, they’re really different from each other. It’s impossible to pick the one. I love shoot with dress from Askasu with great danes, vampiric shoot with red corset, shoots with owls and much more.
08- As a model what is your favorite type of photo-shoot?
Again I just can’t pick the one.
Fantasy, especially dark – I can be a witch, succubus, an elf or anything. Those kind of photos are telling a story, they have a soul. Full makeup, place, setting, outfit etc. It takes a lot of time and effort to make a photoshoot like this happen, but the effect is always worth it.
Shoots with animals, wild or domestic – it doesn’t matter. I love the challenge and effect of the work with animals. You know, the animals are totally unpredictable and that can lead to funny situations.
Feeding alpacas from my mouth and getting sweet kisses from them?
Blue parrots love my hair and they do not want to come down from me?
A tiny owl is hiding in my sleeve and has to be pulled out for every photo?
This all happened to me.
09- Most times you also do your own make-up, hair and styling, do you enjoy that part of the work or do you prefer to have MUA and hairstyling?
I really enjoy this part of my work and I find it really important. I need to have control over everything. Doing it all alone gives me greater satisfaction with the result.
10- You are an international featured model and you worked for some amazing brands, and designers how does that make you feel?
I know that I am recognizable in some environment and people like my work but I still think of myself as a normal girl. I just combine interest in alternative, fashion, gothic and photography. I love to create. I never did it to be famous, I just wanted to create some kind of art.
I feel really appreciated when I receive cooperation proposals.
I’m very grateful for a chance to work with all the amazing people and brands I’ve worked with so far. I feel blessed to be able wear something from designers whose designs and clothes I could only admire on the internet few years ago. It feels wonderful that designers love what I do and want to work with me.
11- Do you have any concepts for future shoots that you’re just dying to try out?
I still didn’t do underwater shoot, so this is one of the shoots that I really want to do. Who knows, maybe I will learn to swim and one day I’ll reach my goal.
I have few more concepts, that I wish to try out in the future, but now I prefer not to share them.
12- You were featured on a book cover, magazines and even took part on a video clip, how did it happen, and now that is done, how do you feel?
It’s always nice to be a part of projects, which are published. I feel really appreciated while doing this. Usually it happens by accident, I’m lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time.
13- Do you have any idol, someone you look up to for inspiration?
I totally admire Ophelia Overdose, Threnody In Velvet and Shelly D’Inferno but there is no person I can say that is my inspiration. I get inspired by everything that is around me. After seeing a movie, taking a walk or a trip… I can see new photo ideas in my head, makeup and outfits that I can put together, all the details.
14- Everyone has their own brand (the thing that makes them stand out), what do you think your brand is?
Definitely my tattoos. They are unique and and nobody else can have an identical copy. My blue hair are my other brand. In my life I’ve had very wide array of colors on my head but after every change I always regret it after a week and I want to go back to blue as soon as possible.
15- What do you consider your biggest career highlight so far?
I am in a situation where I am appreciated for who I am and what I do. I don’t have to pretend anything. This is my biggest career highlight so far and I want to keep on my track. I feel great when people like you and others message me with various proposals and I can agree without any compromise. I can have my own personality and style, and still be a great model for all those fantastic photographers and designers.
16- What more can we expect seeing you do in the future, what are your biggest goals in life?
Life is so unpredictable that you can expect almost everything. The only thing that I’m almost 100% certain is that I will not start a YouTube channel.
One of my biggest goals is to travel much more than now and take photos in wonderful new places. Other big, maybe even bigger goal is to have loving family with whom I could share everything.
17-You look amazing in your modeling outfits! What do you wear when you’re ‘off duty’?
Two words that perfectly describe my wardrobe: long and black.
Some of my modeling outfits are my everyday outfit. I did the cover photo for Gothic and Amazing in a little richer version of everyday me. The only difference is that I usually don’t use contact lenses and wear less make up. Often I don’t use make up at all or slightly emphasize my eyes.
18-Name three things you simply cannot live without every single day.
It will probably sound very common but music. Music accompanies me at work, when I’m resting, I listen to music almost always.
Second thing will be good food. I literally couldn’t live without food, but life is much better when you enjoy what you eat. I love pierogi, burgers, pasta, sushi and cheesecake.
Last one is difficult for me to choose, but it will probably be love.
19 – Do you have some other passions besides modelling, any hobbies you really enjoy and can’t live without?
I enjoy long walks with my dog, music festivals and concerts. I love to travel, admire the beauty of nature. I love flowers, so if I wasn’t a tattoo artist, I would probably become a florist.
20-Well not wanting to abuse your time just one last question: You do know you have many fans all over the world, and some consider you an inspiration, what message would you like leave them?
I want to thank you all for your support. Without you my work wouldn’t be alive.
Life is short, so please, live it well. Be true, respect nature, take care of your loved ones, eat fruits and vegetables. And whatever you enjoy doing, do it with all your heart. Unless you enjoy hurting others. Then just don’t do it.
